Payne’s Hut is located just over the mountains in North East Victoria, Australia, 2.5 hours drive from Albury, 6.5 hours drive from Melbourne and approximately 12 hours from Sydney.

Note: the final kilometres of the drive to Payne’s Hut are quite winding. If you’re prone to car sickness, you may wish to pack travel sickness tablets. The scenery can work as a distraction as you climb into the beautiful Alpine region!
Below are some extra tips to help you on your journey, no matter which direction you’re coming from. The stars will be shining brightly, but bring your torch for the path!
Please note: approximately early June to October the Bogong High Plains Road is closed. Around these dates, contact Vic Roads or call us to check it is open. More than likely through this time, you’ll travel to us via Albury, Mount Hotham (tyre chains may required) or Omeo.

From Falls Creek, drive Bogong High Plains Road 38.4 km, then at the end turn left on Omeo Highway.
After 2.5km turn left onto Fitzgeralds Rd. (You’ll see roadside letterboxes and the sign to Fitzgeralds Road on the right side, pointing left towards Payne’s Hut.)
We are 2.9km on the right. You’ll see the Payne’s Hut sign, turn right and come on in for a cuppa!
You can also come from Albury-Wodonga via Mt Beauty though please note: approximately early June to October the Bogong High Plains Road is closed. Around these dates, contact Vic Roads or call us to check it is open. Otherwise, you’ll travel to us via Mitta Mitta or Mount Hotham.
It’s a 12 hour drive from Sydney (with stops). Follow the M1 south and overnight in Albury or Wodonga, wake up refreshed and head toward Mitta Mitta.
Arrive in style by flying into Albury or Mt Hotham Airport then organising transport to Payne’s Hut or perhaps arrive by helicopter (let us know in advance so we can mow the landing paddock!).
Sam Miranda Winery, Oxley – A relaxing Australian bush setting complete with fine dining and wines. Often very quiet through the weekdays. Enjoy a bush setting to yourself while sipping a beautiful wine or coffee.
King River Cafe, Oxley – This might become a regular restaurant. A wide menu full of delicious lunches, dinners, and desserts. Walk in, order a plate of roesti. Enjoy!
Milawa Cheese Factory, Milawa – Sample a wide range of cheeses, browse local produce, sit down for a casual lunch or enjoy a cuppa and something sweet. Often in Winter the fire is going. Lovely atmosphere
Red Ramia, Myrtleford – Sitting in the shadows of the beautifully monolithic granite cliff faces of Mt Buffalo, Myrtleford’s Red Ramia Trading is famous for its cafe and antiques. Designing, renovating, building or looking for that elusive gift?…you’ll find it.
Ginger Baker Wine Bar & Cafe, Bright – Positioned alongside the gorgeous Ovens River, Ginger Baker Wine & Food enjoys a prime location set amongst a backdrop that includes natural waterfalls, towering elm trees, and a surprisingly eclectic exterior.
Mt Beauty Bakery is full of a wide selection of lunch options and treats.
Ceccanti – Kiewa Valley Wines – A family owned vineyard, winery and cellar door. The setting is natural Australian bush with the cellar door attached to the winery. Prepare yourself for a Tuscan treat, they love food as much as they love wine!
