About Payne’s Hut

Payne’s Hut is a one acre property inside the Fitzgerald’s 3,000 acre farm, situated in the upper reaches of the Mitta River in an area known as Shannonvale or Glen Valley. It’s north of Omeo, past the Blue Duck as you head north or ‘over the other side’ of Falls Creek and Mount Hotham for snow lovers, or south east of Albury-Wodonga!

Three accommodation areas are available, all with crisp linens and delightful features. There is The Hut as you first enter the property, and the Barn which has an East and West Wing on either side of the large dining room.

Further down the path is the outdoor kitchen and eating area situated in the Greenhouse and all around is the garden which overlooks the paddocks and hills beyond.

Meals are available on request (we recommend that we cook for you on the night you arrive after your journey) and the kitchen is fully equipped should you wish to cook for yourself.

Payne’s Hut is BYO and we provide local wines for sale.

The property is yours to explore and to luxuriate in.

Payne’s Hut can also be your base for exploring the High Plains. Enjoy hearing about the local area. Walk and enjoy. Go fishing. Read a book in the garden. Bring friends along and learn how to cook with us. …all the while knowing you have a bed of crisp, white linen waiting for you at the end of the day.

Then shake hands with the Southern Cross by night!

Payne’s Hut was established and built with care by Tess and Graham Payne. As Tess says, “Grae fell in love with the land and I fell in love with him”. They have specially designed this sanctuary for you to relax and leave your cares behind.

Tess and Graham, pride themselves on keeping their property historically and authentically connected to the area. The property adds elements of surprise and expectation a true retreat, a sanctuary. The buildings are simple, built out of slabs of timber and corrugated iron, all designed and built with their involvement and hands.

Tess and Graham revel in the local area that they have called home for over a decade, getting close to two! With world experiences and previous lives in the city, they chose this area called “Shannonvale” as their home and have built a remote country oasis like no other.

It’s a tribute to Australia, the local area and to the essence of care.
